The CRUSA Foundation was duly established on January 15, 1996, under the auspices of Costa Rica's Law on Foundations, by the following Founding Members: Norman A. Brown, Thomas Buergenthal, Franklin Chang-Diaz, Luis Diego Escalante Vargas, Carlos Espinach Phillips, Alfonso Gutiérrez Cerdas, Thomas E. Lovejoy, Francis J. McNeil, Ana María Sittenfeld Appel and Carmen María Valverde Acosta.
In the year 2000, the IRS granted CRUSA the status of 501(c)(3) allowing for American individuals and organizations to deduct donations to those institutions from their taxes. Likewise, since 2005, CRUSA is recognized to be of “Public Interest”, which allows it to receive contributions locally.
